The contemporary Indian art on show at L'Inde Le Palais.

January 25, 2008 (18,30 p.m.)

Two different aspects of the contemporary Indian art on show at L'Inde Le Palais. The exhibition, which took place on Friday, January 25, celebrated two brilliant contemporary Indian artists- performing their debut in Italy - sharing the same aggressive approach.

On one side, we have ironic, surreal and striking works by internationally known Rajendra Kapse (he also exhibited his pieces of art during prestigious events hosted in London), famed for his oil paintings portraying himself as an Hindu god, which led to blasphemy accusations.

On the other hand, the exhibition displayed hypersophisticated shots by Ashish Chawla, picturing sensual female nudes which escaped the Indian censorship only because the artist portrayed foreign models. Posing nude is still a taboo in the country, and Indian models didn't actually feel in the position of breaking the rules, even though they were asked to do so by a photographer like Chawla.

Kapse and Chawla exemplify the contemporary Indian reality and its future development.

EMBROIDERY ITALIAN FASHION

The exhibition and book presentation.

Ten years of Italian Fashion and embroidery art

L'Inde Le Palais concept store presents a fine book illustrating the embroidery art and featuring, among others, Valentino, Dolce & Gabbana, Blumarine, Antonio Marras, Riccardo Tisci, Versace, Gianfranco Ferrè, Roberto Cavalli, Etro, Emilio Pucci. The event will be attended by Giusy Ferrè, who wrote the foreword to the book, and Riccardo Tisci. The precious book (edited by Damiani, Goldline collection) will be presented along with some made in Italy cult-dresses which were created over the last 10 years and suggestive vintage items taken from the archive of Jato embroideries.

The book offers an in depth and involving study on Italian Fashion, documenting the development occurred in the Fashion industry over the last ten 10 years, always keeping embroidery as a reference point.

After the luxurious, neo- baroque and neo-romantic exaggerations of the 1980's , frequently bordering on a kitsch style, and the severe minimalism of the 1990's, that temporarily banned all kind of embellishment, the embroidery art has regained popularity during the last 10 years. According to the media, this is the maximalism age.

Both revered fashion stylists and emerging artists increasingly make use of embroidery not only as a decorative item, but also as a basic element for their creations.

The contemporary embroidery art boasts today a primary role in the fashion business, as an integral part of all major trends, like ethno-folk, conceptual, eclecticism, deconstructionism, romanticism and dark.

The book, enriched with photos and with the testimony of the most revered artists of the fashion industry, explores the universe of the New Embroidery. A fashion art that takes inspiration from different ages and cultural patterns, which have been reinterpreted by the extremely talented Italian stylists.

Embroidery - Italian Fashion

By Federico Rocca

Foreword: Giusy Ferrè

Photos by: Marco Ravenna

Edited by Damiani

EXTREME METISSAGE, the new double-cd by L’Inde Le Palais

April 27, 2005

A double album including 24 tracks, a blend of several music genres and new sounds, following the renown and appreciated store's philosophy.

The track "Extreme Metissage" exemplifies the album's mood and features a fusion of a funk base by Mauro Malavasi and Davide Romani and sounds produced by Indian sitar, eventually reaching Greek's typical melodies. The album comprises two cds, L'Inde Le Palais" and "Cafè Le Palais", featuring different music styles and atmospheres, suitable for different moments. The sounds range from chill, ethnic and chamber music (which are perfect for a morning listening) to a quick night rhythm, taking inspiration from the "Cafè Le Palais" and influenced by electro-funk and house. "Extreme Metissage" is conceived as a sort of a day-long trip, marked by a reinterpretation of the past and an experimental approach, involving celtic, dance and Indian music. The album explores the universe of ethnic and acoustic sounds and is influenced by the New Romantic genre of the 1980's, by pop-electro sounds and baroque music. The first cd, "L'Inde Le Palais" is introduced by "L'Overture du Palais", delivering a pop-reinterpretation of the German electro-sound typical of the 1970's. "September Wind" features the charismatic Margherita Turco, aka Ghita, a intense Japanese voice, covering cult-track "Tomorrow" by Amanda Lear, now also performed as a chill out version by contemporary icon Eva Robin's. Curiously, Eva Robin's was chorus singer in the track's original version, which was released in 1977. "Other side", interpreted by Gigi Fazio, creates a magical ambience thanks to a series of voices, echoes and mysterious choirs. The album's most suggestive track, Covillè Gate, features the Arke's string quartet, performing a moving composition suspended between Celtic and Mediterranean sounds. The musical journey also passes through Delhi with "1 h 76" , evoking Eastern suggestions with Indian sitar and tabla. "Fermature du Palais", written in a pure Celtic style, marks the end of the first part of the journey. In the second cd, titled "Cafè Le Palais" , the rhythm grows faster as the night approaches, till it reaches house and dance sounds. "Watch your steps" provides an electro-pop version of the track written by the Change, the iconic disco band of the 1980's. The new version is performed by electro-clash emerging talent Tying Tiffany. Another song by the "Change", Hold Tight, was also remixed according to house music's patterns. Dj Lorenzo Montanà offers an unusual electro-house remix of the ever-present "Tomorrow".

MICHEL HAILLARD

October 27, 2004

A not to be missed tribal-chic event for fans of cult-objects and fetish style combined with furniture design. Internationally famed French designer Michel Haillard officially debuts in Italy with an exhibition hosted at L'Inde Le Palais, Bologna. For three years now, the innovative concept store has proposed a refined selection of apparel items, books and import CDs, various objects and furnishings. Now, L'Inde Le Palais is the sole agent for the brand Haillard. On show in Bologna, 20 remarkable pieces - chairs, trumeau, armchairs, lamps - all standing out for the creative approach. His totem-like furniture pieces are made of ancient objects, animal skins and horns. His style conjures up tribal and contemporary patterns, baroque and modernism. Fabrics selected and assembled by Haillard assume a new, eloquent meaning: the opulence of zebu, African buffalo and ram's horns are mixed with bones and skin of Chinese goats, warthog's teeth, marmot's fur and the graphic effect of alligator skin. Plus, Haillard's visionary and creative talent takes inspiration from different ages and cultures, thanks to a cross-cutting theme approach. In this way, the parchment which was used by interior designers of the 1930's is compared with the lemon-wood veneer typical of the age of Carlo X. The fairy-tale universe of Haillard always shows a strong inclination to give a new life to "dead" fabrics, of course in compliance with the European law with reference to the conservation of animal species threatened with extinction.

October 13, 2004

KIBOSH: Transgression on show. With irony.

L'Inde Le Palais hosts the sexy-choc images (October 13-27, 2004) taken by famed Terry Richardson, an icon of contemporary fashion photography.

On show, 30 sensual and extreme photos on the border of pornography, exemplifying the artistic creativity of one of the most talented photographers of our times.

After the recent success of the vernissage held in New York, Richardson presents his exhibition for the first time in Europe, also introducing his latest and scandalous book entitled "Kibosh".

During his career, Richardson has shot the advertising campaigns of most revered international fashion houses (Yves Saint Laurent, Gucci, Levi's, Hugo Boss, Anna Molinari, Costume National, Matsuda). Since 1997, he has worked, in collaboration with art director Nikko Amandonico, with brand Sisley (Benetton Group), for which he has created some of the most provocative advertising campaigns of the Italian fashion system. Frequently deemed as a contemporary Helmut Newton for his strong interest in sexual subjects, Richardson calls himself a "rockographer", thus underlining his passion for photography and rock music. His work is essentially based on the absence of a technique: Richardson celebrates the accidental and does not use any image, stage or illumination project. The photographer's lens are apparently his own eyes, catching reality whatever it might be, with no artifice. When working, he simply relies upon two instant cameras - one in each hand - and his thirst for emotions.

Listen to the interview with Terry Richardson

JOHN GALLIANO ON SHOW: FASHION & ART

May 9, 2002

Exclusive and precious cult apparel items created by John Galliano on show -for the first time in Europe - in Bologna.

JOHN GALLIANO Fashion & Art

The exhibition pays a tribute to the whimsical British - but French based - stylist, deemed as one of the most genial artists of the international fashion system. The event offers the chance to take a close look at a series of clothes designed by Galliano, who is now Dior's art director, for his own collection, from 1996 to 2001. In the same period, the stylist also worked as art director and designer for Givenchy, and, since 1997, for Dior. Such prestigious collaborations also contributed to consecrate his success as the most innovative designer of the new millennium. THE EXHIBITION: the outfits on display at L'Inde Le Palais all share the same distinguishing feature: excess. Galliano's creations go beyond all limits in terms of colours, lines, combinations, textiles and fabrics. Juan Carlos (Galliano's true name) is renown for his elaborate dresses, which are enriched with decorations, ruches and volants, but also for his nude and daring outfits. He also owes his fame to bold coupling and underwear. His outfits perfectly mirrors his unconventional, excessive lifestyle and philosophy, which has always been contrary to any form of bon-ton and understatement. The exhibition displays a series of creations which were unveiled during the stylist's showcases but never reached the market: unique pieces featuring an accurate research process, an original blend of fabrics (silk, leather, pearl, laces and taffeta) and a whimsical design. Items on show demonstrate how fashion creations can be turned into a piece of art . EXCEPTIONAL MODELS. Famed actress and models have worn creations by John Galliano. Clothes on show at L'Inde Le Palais also include iconic pieces worn, among others, by black Venus Naomi Campbell and Milla Jovovich. The beautiful Milla showcased a precious and daring creation by Galliano during the Cannes première of the "Fifth element", directed by Luc Besson, of which she was the protagonist; the same dress in now on show at L'Inde. AN EVENT -VERNISSAGE. Eva Robin's will be guest star of the event, and - of course - she will be wearing a fabulous dress designed by Galliano. Eva will perform live the song "La Rosa", which is included in the new album just released by L'Inde Le Palais, delivering the musical background to the event.

VINTAGE! OH VINTAGE!

October 18, 2001

« A century of vintage : 1880-1990 »

Jato celebrates 100 years of womenswear with an exhibition displaying 20 clothes.

On show, remarkable pieces produced with craftsmanlike techniques: precious bodices from the Victorian Age; wide taffeta skirts which were hand-embroidered with jais and laces at the end of XIXth century; Belle Epoque clothes adorned with glass beads; a brocade dress with sable fur sleeves; an asymmetrical cocktail dress with a paillettes collar, according to the 1960's American taste; a jersey multi-coloured dress inspired by geometrical patterns (1966). The exhibition also includes pieces from the Beatles' era, like the military jacket with a "guru" collar and the Indian-inspired dress manufactured with an original sahri.

All items on display reveal the inspiration of contemporary fashion, proposing a style fusion of different ages. Thus, the exhibition features vintage items teamed with creations designed by contemporary artists like John Galliano, Paco Rabanne, Cacharel and Razu Mikhina.

YONDERBOI

June 7, 2001

The new Hungarian star is from a small village located 250 km. from Budapest. By dint of buying vintage vinyl and Trevira ties (the socialist brand producing ties during the 60's and the 70's) in Budapest he gave rise to a new style which is rapidly spreading across Europe and the Usa. His name is Yonderboi, aged 20, and he's bringing new life to the international downtempo music. His musical approach features trip-hop, nu jazz, tango, new folk and Eastern Europe's cartoons soundtracks. At the same time, Yonderboi, who is leader of a band of young and genial musicians, is becoming the symbol of an extremely refined style, resembling a sixties look showcased by the protagonists of some noir movies: a black jacket, tie and 1960's fashion patterns . Actually, this is simply "The charming of the East", remixing Western icons with an Hungarian touch.

Dj Adamski delivered the soundtrack on site.

"Stomach is my third ear. The music I love, that makes me want to dance, makes me feel something in the stomach. I prefer not to listen to the music when I eat delicious food, as I don't want to be distracted. Music feeds you, makes you feel fulfilled. It's food for your soul".
